20 Year Old Wins Almost $60 Million On First Try! Quick: What did you think when Erika Greene, age 20, won $58.9 million in the Big Game lottery? The reaction will say a lot about who you are. Thursday's water-cooler talk focused on the astounding luck of the young warehouse worker who struck the jackpot after buying her first-ever lottery tickets at a Texaco gas station in Georgia. Two other winners have yet to come forward. Greene isn't even old enough to toast her windfall with a glass of champagne. Or to bet it all at the gambling tables of Las Vegas. She can't run for Congress. Or rent a car without paying a huge premium -- though she could always buy a fleet of limos. All of which makes more than a few of her elders fret. ''It's going to be a real challenge for her,'' said one child and family therapist quoted in USA TODAY. Will it go to her head? Turn her into a spoiled, indulgent rich kid? From Greene's comments so far, she seems quite sensible about what she wants to do: stop working, buy a house, invest the money so it works for her. Perhaps she does not (yet) have grand ideas about sailing the world on her own yacht or eliminating AIDS in Africa. But is there any reason she should have such large dreams just because she now has money? The young and naïve have no monopoly on mishandling money. Enron executives and some Hollywood stars spring most immediately to mind. Some lucky young people inherit or make fortunes, too, without attracting the same worry. There's a reason for that. Unlike Greene, they aren't people we can identify with. Their wealth isn't derived from walking into a store and buying a lottery ticket the way anyone can. So unlike her, they are not considered common property. There is an old saying that ''money cannot buy you happiness.'' But in at least one survey of people who had come into wealth in a variety of ways, most concluded that indeed, it cannot -- but it certainly helps. So here's to Greene and her newfound fortune. And for the envious, here's a question to answer: If you had won a similar jackpot when you were 20, would it have ruined your life? Thought not. |
